  1. Age of Unreason – Murrow on McCarthy

February 8, 2012 by Holly Thomas

    Listen:

“We can deny our heritage and our history, but we cannot escape responsibility for the result.”

“We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.”

“We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason.”

    And -

“Who has served his country better, Senator McCarthy, or I? I would like to be remembered, if at all, by the answer to that question.”

    - Edward R. Murrow

A democratic strategist likens the right-wing attack on Planned Parenthood to McCarthyism¬†for its “guilt by association” tactics. “Like McCarthy himself, in the name of defending American principles, they seek to bring down patriotic Americans and important American institutions.”

It’s easy to view McCarthyism as a political aberration from a long-ago, black-and-white era. But in every age Murrow’s statement, “We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason,” ¬†should be considered. What do you think?
